Overview Of Data Gateway In Power BI

Overview
In this article, we will discuss the following.
  1. Definition of Gateway
  2. Prerequisites to Configure Power BI Gateway
  3. Important Points before we start Installation of Data Gateway
  4. Two Modes of Gateway Installation
    1. Personal Mode
    2. Recommended Mode (Enterprise Mode)
  5. Difference between Personal Mode and Recommended Mode
What do we mean by Data Gateway?
  • A Gateway is a software which will provide a facility to connect our on-premise data sources (like SQL Server, SharePoint and many more) with online services like Power BI.
  • A gateway acts as a Gatekeeper.
  • Gateway listens to requests from client and grant access only if authentication is successful.
  • A gateway uses encryption to store sensitive information like passwords.
  • A gateway will encrypt and compress all the data to pass through it.
Prerequisites to Configure Power BI Gateway
Before we start the installation of Power BI Gateway, we need to consider the following prerequisites.
Minimum System Requirements
.Net FrameworkMinimum 4.5
Operating System64 – bit Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 or later
Recommended System Requirements
CPU8 Core
RAM8 GB
Operating System64 -bit Windows Server 2008 R2 or later
Important Points before we Start Gateway Installation
  • It is not feasible to install Gateway on Domain Controller machine.
  • We cannot install a gateway on a computer, such a laptop, that may be turned off, asleep, or not connected to the internet.
  • We can install a gateway on 64- bit machine only.
  • We can install up to two on-premise gateway in a single machine. (One for Personal Mode and one for Recommended Mode)
  • We cannot install more than one gateway running on the same mode on the same commuter.
Ex
We cannot install two Personal mode gateways on a single machine or we cannot install two Recommended mode gateways on a single machine.
  • For Personal mode, we can install and configure one on-premise gateway for one Power BI user.
Ex
If I have installed one gateway with Personal Mode on Machine 1 with user “Jack", now, if I install gateway with Personal Mode on Machine 2 with same user “Jack”, it will not be allowed or it will take the most recent installation setting of machine 2.
  • For Recommended mode, we can configure more than one on-premise gateways with a single user. We can manage all the gateways using Power BI Online Services.
Two Modes of Gateway Installation
Power BI provides two modes of Gateway when we install Gateway.
  1. Personal Mode
  2. Recommended Mode

Now let’s elaborate on each term in detail.
Personal Mode
Let’s take a real-life scenario. Suppose you have a large Excel file, One SQL SERVER database, and one Oracle database. You are the only one who is responsible to use data source and prepare Power BI report. You don’t want to share this thing with anyone other in an organization. At that time, you can go with the Personal Mode.
  • Allow single user to connect to the data source
  • Sharing of Data source is not allowed.
  • Can be used with Power BI Online.
Recommended Mode
Let’s take a real-life scenario. Suppose you have different data sources, like Large Excel file, SQL Server, and Oracle data source. Now, you want to share the same data source with all your vendors, people from an organization. At that time, you can go with Recommended or Enterprise Mode.
  • Allow multiple users to connect to the data source.
  • Can be used with – Power BI, Power Apps, Flow and Azure Logic Apps.
Difference between Personal Mode and Recommended Mode for Gateway Installation
Now, let’s check the difference between Personal Mode and Enterprise (Recommended) Mode.
Personal ModeEnterprise (Recommended) Mode
Sharing is not allowedSharing is allowed
Best for single userBest when you want to share data source with Organization
Only use with Power BIWe can use it with – Power BI, Power Apps, Flow, Azure Logic
Conclusion
This is how we can get started with Data Gateway in Power BI. In my next articles, we will talk about the installation process of Data Gateway with Personal Mode and Recommended Mode.

How to partition or split DataTable in C#?

Today we will discuss how we can divide or split a very large data table into fixed size of chunks? Scenario: Suppose there is a data table which has 1000 Rows. When you perform for each loop on data table and read each row at that time it will take too much time. If we devide 1000 Rows datatable into 10 fixed sizes (e.g. 100 Rows) datatable, It will take less time. Let's check how to achieve it. Here is a code. private static List<DataTable> SplitTable(DataTable originalTable, int batchSize) { List<DataTable> tables = new List<DataTable>(); int i = 0; int j = 1; DataTable newDt = originalTable.Clone(); newDt.TableName = "Table_" + j; newDt.Clear(); foreach (DataRow row in originalTable.Rows) { DataRow newRow = newDt.NewRow(); newRow.ItemArray = row.ItemArray; newDt.Rows.Add(newRow); i++; if (i == batchSize) ...

How To Lock Objects In Power BI

Overview Sometimes, there is a situation where when we open a report and click on any visual it accidentally nudges a chart a little bit to the right or left. Sometimes, by mistake when viewing a report, the arrangement of visuals scatters a little bit. Microsoft rolls out one new amazing feature to resolve this issue, that is, Lock Objects in Power BI. Advantages of using this feature When our purpose is to only view a report, this feature is a boon for us. Visualization’s position is not changed. Saves a lot of the developer's time to resolve the position related issues. Note   -  This feature is not saved with the report. So, every time you open a report, you need to enable this feature. Now, let’s understand this feature in a brief manner. To understand this, I will first show you one report in which I have not enabled “Lock Objects” feature. Step 1 The below screenshot shows my report which doesn’t have the enabled Lock Objects feature. ...

Overview In this article, we will learn how we can create Event Calendar within Power BI. We have a requirement from many of my clients to show Events within the Calendar by Category Colors. In order to achieve that requirement, we can use the custom visual from the marketplace which is “ Calendar by MAQ Software ”. You can directly download it using   URL . At the end of the article, you are able to create Event Calendar as shown in the following screenshot. We have the following data to be shown in the event Calendar. Event Start Date Event End Date Description Category   For your practice, you can download sample data source file and Power BI file using   GitHub . Let’s get started! Step 1 Import “ Calendar by MAQ Software ” from Marketplace or download using the   URL . Once it is imported we can see the visual in visualization pane.
