TimeLine Slicer In Power BI

Overview
Sometimes, there is a situation in which we have to represent or filter our data based on the following parameters.
  • Year
  • Quarter
  • Month
  • Week
  • Day
As we all know, Power BI provides some custom visuals in Power BI Gallery. One of the popular visuals for this type of filtering is “TimeLine Slicer.”
In this article, we will learn how we can configure this TimeLine Slicer with our Power BI Report.
Now, let’s get started!
Step 1
First, we need to download that visual from a Power BI Custom Visual Gallery.
Here is a link for download custom Visual - URL
It will open the screen below.
 
Step 2
Search for TimeLine Slicer.
 
Step 3
It will open a description page of a visual. Click Add.
 
Step 4
Download a Slicer.
 
It will download a slicer.
 
Step 5
We will import this slicer in Power BI Desktop. To import, click on Import a custom visual.
 
Import from a File.
 
It will open a pop up > click Import.
 
Choose the downloaded Visual.
 
Click Open.
Our Visual is added successfully in the Power BI Desktop.
 
Step 6
We have the following data for Sales.
  • Customer Name
  • Order Date
  • Product Name
  • Region
  • Sale
Now, we have ordered data for the years 2009 to 2012
We have to filter our table based on,
  • Year
  • Quarter
  • Month
  • Week
  • Day
 
For that, we will add Time Line Slicer.
Step 7
Add a Time Line Slicer from a Visual. In Time column, select Order Date.
By default, it is showing monthly filter.
 
Step 8
Now, let’s analyze TimeLine Slicer Visual. On the top of a visual, it is showing the option to select Time Line.
  • Y = Year
  • Q = Quarter
  • M = Month
  • W =Week
  • D = Day
 
Step 9
Let’s click on Year.
It will open a visual like this.
 
The year from 2009-2012 is displaying. Now, let’s click on the year 2010.
It will filter the data based on it.
 
Step 10
Let’s click on Quarter. It will open a visual like this.
 
I want Q1 and Q2 data for 2010. We can drag a slider to select the Quarter.
 
Step 11
Let’s click on Month. It will open a visual like this.
 
I want a data for January of 2010.
It will filter the data.
 
Step 12
Let’s click on Week. It will open a visual like this.
 
I need January's first week data.
 
Step 13
Let’s click on the Day. It will open a visual like this.
 
I need the data for March 1 2009. I will click on it so that the data is filtered.
 
Step 14
There are various options for formatting. We can apply formatting using the below screenshot.
We can change the color of cells as well and many more.
 
Conclusion
This is how we can apply granular filter using TimeLine Slicer in Power BI.

How To Lock Objects In Power BI

Overview Sometimes, there is a situation where when we open a report and click on any visual it accidentally nudges a chart a little bit to the right or left. Sometimes, by mistake when viewing a report, the arrangement of visuals scatters a little bit. Microsoft rolls out one new amazing feature to resolve this issue, that is, Lock Objects in Power BI.
